Potty Training Girls: Everything you Need to Know

Q: I am about ready to begin potty training my little girl? Are girls really easier to potty train than boys?

A: For some reason, most experts agree that potty training girls is a little bit easier than boys. Some suggest that it may be because mothers are the primary potty trainer and girls have more opportunity to watch and learn passively. Others, suggest that little boys may simply be more active and easily distracted. For whatever the reason-----potty training little girls is a little bit easier than potty training boys. Keep in mind; however, that all children are different, so it is impossible to know ahead of time how your child will respond to potty training.

Q: How can I be sure my little girl is ready for potty training?

A: Before you begin potty training girls, you will need to evaluate your child carefully. Ask yourself these questions before you begin potty training:

  1. Is you little girl at least 18 months old?

  2. Can your daughter pull her underwear up and down on her own?

  3. Does your daughter have bowel movements at a predictable time of the day?

  4. Does she frequently wake up from naps with a dry diaper?

  5. Does your little girl routinely go 2-3 hours with a dry diaper?

  6. Does your little girl show interest in using the potty?

Q: We are ready to begin potty training our little girl, but I haven't a clue where to begin? How do I start potty training?

A: In general, the best strategy for potty training is to let your little girl go at her own pace. Parents who push their little girls to potty train before they are emotionally ready are usually in for a long and difficult process. If you think that she is ready, here are a few tips to help you along the way.

Before you begin potty training, buy a few potty training books and videos to get her “pumped up” for the big day. Every day, let her watch a potty training video and every night read her a potty training book. During this time DO NOT put her on the potty. This is a passive week designed to get her comfortable with the idea of becoming a BIG KID.

Potty Training Girls: The Fun Factor

When you are both ready to begin potty training, here are a few fun ideas to help along the way!

  • Let your little girl pick out special Big Girl underwear that she will get excited about wearing.

  • Make a sticker chart to chart her progress and let her put her favorite stickers on the potty training progress chart.

  • Buy her a potty training baby doll that actually pees on the potty. Then tell her that it is her job to teach her little girl how to be a big kid. She will have fun showing her baby doll how to use the potty and in the process you may find that she potty trains herself.

  • Let her participate in picking out a special potty. This may get her excited about potty training.

Q: Is there anything I need to know before potty training my little girl?

A: The only health concern that is associated to potty training girls is the risk for bladder infections. To minimize this risk, teach your little girl to wipe front to back. This keeps bacteria from stools out of the urethra and minimizes the risk of your little girl getting a bladder infection. If your little girl experiences pain while urinating, increased urge to urinate, frequent accidents after potty training is established or abdominal pain, call your pediatrician to rule out a bladder infection.
