Q: I am about ready to begin potty training my little boy, but I am nervous? All my friends tell me that potty training little boys is harder than potty training little girls? Is this true?
A: For some reason, most experts agree that potty training boys is a little bit harder than potty training girls. Some suggest that little boys may simply be more active and not have the desire to sit and learn how to potty train. Others suggest that little boys may not have as many opportunities to watch their fathers use the restroom and learn how it is done, simply because mothers are the primary caregivers. For whatever the reason-----potty training little boys seems to be a bit harder. Remember though that all children respond to potty training differently. It is impossible to know how your own son will respond to potty training before you begin.
Q: How can I be sure my little boy is ready for potty training?
A: Before you begin potty training boys, you will need to ask yourself a few important questions regarding your little boys physical and emotional maturity.
Is you little boy at least 18 months old?
Can your little boy pull his underwear up and down on his own?
Does your son have bowel movements at a predictable time of the day?
Does he frequently wake up from naps with a dry diaper?
Does your little boy routinely go 2-3 hours with a dry diaper?
Does your little boy show any interest in using the potty or becoming a big kid?
Q: We are ready to begin potty training our little boy, but I haven't a clue where to begin? What is the best way to begin potty training my son?
A: In general, the best strategy for potty training is to let your little boy go at his own pace. Parents who try to persuade and push their little boys to potty train before they are emotionally ready are usually in for a long and difficult process. If you think that he is really ready to begin potty training, here are a few tips to help you along the way.
Before you begin potty training, buy a few potty training books and videos to get him excited about the big day. Every day, put on a potty training video and watch it with your son, and every night read him a potty training book. During this time DO NOT try to put him on the potty or push him to wear underwear. This is a passive week designed to get him comfortable with the idea of becoming a BIG KID.
