The Lesson Plan on Whales and Sea Life:

Discuss the following Whale and Sea Life facts with your toddler or preschooler:

The ocean is a vast and interesting place. Oceans make up a large part of the world and they are filled with fish, whales, and many other sea creatures. If you go to the ocean you will notice that it is not the same as the water you drink. Water in the ocean is salty and the fish like it. There are whales, sharks and many fish in the ocean. Can you name some fish that you know live in the ocean? There are clownfish (Nemo’s), sharks, sea turtles, whales, tuna, stingrays, and even sea horses. Which one is your favorite? The fish in the ocean come in all kinds of colors and shapes. Some are very long and some are very fat. There are fish that are polka doted, fish that are striped, and fish that are multi-colored. What color fish do you like the best? Fish breathe in the water through special gills that are on the side of their necks. Fish don’t have arms and legs like we do, but they move around the ocean by swimming with their fins and tails.

The Lesson Plan on Whales:
Whales are different; they are not fish at all. Whales are the largest mammals in the world. Fish can breathe in the water, but unlike fish, whales need to breathe air. They breath by using the a hole on the top of their heads called a blowhole. Sometimes they blow air out of their hole so hard, that it sprays misty water high in the sky! There are many different types of whales. Show your preschooler pictures of blue whales, killer whales, whale sharks and more.

Lesson Plan for Whales: Fun Sea Life, Fish, & Whale Activities for Preschoolers

Shark Attack:

Have your children pick which fish they would like to be. Now tell them that you are the shark and it is your job to find them. Since they are little fish, they need to swim as fast as they can away from the shark. It is a fun and fishy game of tag that you can play in and out of the water.

Whale and Fishy Arts and Crafts:

Buy some fun fish and whale foam pieces. Have your child paint his or her own ocean on a large sheet of paper or canvas by stamping or stenciling sea life!

A Whale of an Art Project:

You will need one small brown lunch bag and a paper party horn. Have your child paint the paper bag blue and the paper party horn blue. Once it is dry, stuff the paper bag ¾ full with loose paper or magazine stuffing. Tie the end with a rubber band so as to create a tail for the whale. Using a pair of scissors cut multiple slits in the end of the party horn and curl them down. Place the party horn in the top of the whale so it looks like there is a water spray coming from the blowhole. As a finishing touch, have your child paint eyes and a mouth on their whale!

Fish Pets:

If you are up for the task, get a small aquarium or fish bowl from the pet shop. Have your child pick out a few fish that they like and decorate their fish bowl with rocks and sea plants. Teach them how to feed their fish and take care of them every day.
