Tips for Helping Baby Sleep Better TONIGHT

Sleep Better Tonight: 10 sleep inducing tips:

Better Baby Sleep Tip #1:
Good Vibrations! Many babies are still used to the movements inside the womb. Vibrating bouncy seats and infant chairs are ideal for simulating this and helping babies sleep quickly.

Better Baby Sleep Tip #2: Swings! When vibrations just aren't enough, try rocking your baby in your arms, or placing them in an infant swing. The movements mimic the gentle rocking inside the womb and are comforting.

Better Baby Sleep Tip #3: Water ! Some babies can be calmed instantly by placing them in a warm bath tub. The warm water is soothing and relaxing to infants who are over stimulated. Lavender baby bath can be applied to the water for older babies to help them sleep better.

Better Baby Sleep Tip #4: Pacify them! All babies are born with the desire to suck. The act of sucking is comforting and most babies want to suck even when they are not hungry. Even if you are breastfeeding, a pacifier can be a great addition to the night time routine. Offer your baby a pacifier when they are tired, or offer to nurse them. Just be careful and don't let them nurse too frequently or you will be at their beckon call throughout the day! Don't worry about your baby getting too attached to the pacifier, you will have plenty of time to get rid of it as they get older.

Better Baby Sleep Tip #5: Heat!
Babies are used to being warm. Make sure that you are dressing them warmly and if needed bundle them in a warm blanket. If you want to get your baby's blanket warm quickly toss it in the dryer for a few minutes and  then swaddle them. Your baby will be asleep in no time.

Better Baby Sleep Tip #6:
Swaddle them! Babies are used to being in close quarters. After they are born, the sensation of freedom is a bit scary. Wrap them snuggly in a warm blanket ( see tip #5). The more secure they feel, the faster they will fall asleep. If you can't seem to get the swaddle right, ask your Pediatrician to show you how. Sleeping like a baby isn't as easy as it sounds.

Better Baby Sleep Tip #7: Feed them! It might seem like obvious advice but so many new parents forget how often babies need to eat. The average breastfeeding baby needs to eat every 2-3 hours. While some babies can go 4 hours at a time, the majority of newborns will eat every 3 hours. Some feedings go better than others, so try to remember how much your baby ate at his last feeding. If your baby isn't sleeping well, chances are he is hungry.

Better Baby Sleep Tip #8: Music
If your new baby won't sleep or is particularly fussy, try music! Some babies love to be sung to which is why traditional lullabies are so popular. If singing isn't your favorite, try playing classical music  softly while your baby falls asleep.Just make sure it isn't overly stimulating music. Try playing Nocturnes which is actually derived from the word nocturnal which means nighttime!

Better Baby Sleep Tip #9: Ocean waves & Heartbeats.  For 9 months, your baby slept soundly inside of your womb listening to one thing over and over again...your heartbeat. If your baby isn't sleeping soundly, try playing a heartbeat for them. Most baby stores sell stuffed animals or mobiles that come programed with multiple sounds: heartbeats, ocean waves, rainforest sounds..etc.

Better Baby Sleep Tip #10: YOU!
Sometimes when all else fails, remember that the one thing your baby misses most of all is ---you. Separation from you is distressing and scary. Hold your baby and reassure them. You will have plenty of time to teach them limits once they are older.

You are in the process of building a bond with them that will last a lifetime. They need to know that you will be there to address all of their fears. They depend on you to know how to help them. As scary as that is, remember that you are the one person who knows your baby the best. Trust in your maternal instincts and in your abilities to decode your baby's cries. Try these tips tonight and your baby will be sleeping soundly in no time! Have a great night's sleep...tonight!
