Baby Developmental Milestones: 6 months

6 month olds develop differentlyBy the time your baby is 6 months old, life should be getting a bit easier for both of you. Most babies will sleep longer stretches through the night, breastfeeding is very established, and you are beginning to get a glimpse into your child's personality. Giggles and gurggles are replaced by full belly laughs and babbling, and you may begin to see the start of stranger anxiety. Every child is different, so if your child is lagging behind, try not to panic. All babies progress at different rates. Developmental markers are merely meant to be used as a guide and you should always consult your pediatrician if you are concerned about your child’s development. But here are a few things you should look for.

  • Your baby should be laughing and cooing
  • He/she should make eye contact, track objects, and get excited about seeing familiar faces
  • Vowel sounds become present
  • Reaching for and grabbing objects within view
  • Can roll over and back (although not necessarily consistent at times)
  • May be able to sit up with minimal help
  • Teething may be beginning
  • May be able to use pincher fingers to grasp items
  • Enjoys games centered around object permanence such as Peek a Boo and Where's Baby?
  • May begin to have obvious likes and dislikes
At this age, babies are beginning to learn the English language. Talk to them as much as possible and narrate the things you are doing throughout the day so that they begin to learn the flow of language. Now is a great time to begin to read to your baby if you haven't already. Simple board books with repetition are usually the best and books with bright contrasting colors are sure to get peek your baby's interest. Baby mirrors and toy rattles are usually favorite toys for babies this age. Remember never to give your 6 month old baby anything that he could choke on. Babies at 6 months old, explore everything by putting it in their mouths. A 6 month old baby will chew and drool on everything, so make sure the toy is safe and appropriate. If you are interested in reading to your baby, try these great books from your local library or from Amazon.
