1) Write a large letter on several pieces of paper. Pick a letter the child will either see or hear often, like the first letter of her name.Use these papers as large flash cards through out the day.

2) You can also draw something that starts with that letter to help with sounds. Place this letter in ‘strategic’ places around the house, keeping it at eye level. If the letter of the day is A, you might put an 'A' on her apple at lunchtime!

3) During playtime, ask your child what the first sound is for the name of the toy, i.e. block is ‘b’, car is ‘c’. Pick out some toys that have the ‘letter of the week’ at the beginning.

4) Using an old metal cookie sheet and some magnetic letters, help your child pick out the letter of the week and the two of you can make words with them. These can also be placed on the refrigerator or dishwasher face. When he recognizes several letters and sounds, you can play with sounding out words.g

5) Use the ‘find the letter’ game on outings and grocery trips. “I spy the letter A’ keeps them occupied and still teaches at the same time.

6) Using a dry erase board or chalk board, have your child practice copying the letters of the week. You can write them on the board in ‘dot’ lines and let him trace them, or write them with full lines and he can copy. You can also use standard paper, sandboxes, dirt, or shaving cream (cleaning hands while playing is always a good thing!)

7) At story time, pick a story that has the weekly letter in the title. For example, “T” week could be “The Giving Tree” by Shel Silverstein. “W” week could be “Where the Wild Things Are” by Maurice Sendak.
